The Healing Power Of Music

Hello friends, and welcome to this month’s Joyinmovement newsletter,

Do you enjoy music? I sure do. I enjoy listening and singing. I know my voice isn’t great, but that never seems to stop me from singing! I also like to make up my own words to songs. I’m like a singing Hallmark card. But if I had to choose, I’d say moving and dancing to music is my favorite musical activity. I guess you’d expect that from someone who named her business Joyinmovement 🙂

Depending on the music, it serves me in many ways. For instance, I always notice the background music in movies and the effect it has on me. Music can relax me, or it can give me energy and spur me on to action. Certain songs make me cry, no matter how many times I hear them. Certainly music evokes memories. Who can forget the first time they saw The Wizard of Oz and Judy Garland singing “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”?

Recently the topic of music as healing has gained ground and I’m seeing more and more articles written about it. For sure, without even knowing the science and research behind music as healing, it feels subjectively and experientially that this would be the case. A few years ago a wonderful MUST SEE movie called Alive Inside showed how music reawakened memory in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

And recently I came upon this article which I want to share with you and hope you’ll read. http://michigantoday.umich.edu/can-music-heal/

It’s a fascinating look at not only the history of music as healing, but the current uses and benefits of music as healing. We all can benefit from what we learn from this article, and after all, who can’t use more healing?

I’d love to hear about your experiences of music as healing or about how you find Joyinmovement through music!

Have a musically healthy month!
