Hello friends, and welcome to this month’s Joyinmovement newsletter.
Rene Bibaud is a professional jump roper. What a great title, don’t you think? She is also an educator, motivational speaker, and entertainer. And she’s been reading my Joyinmovement newsletter for 11 years now, and we’ve stayed in touch all that time.
You might recall back in 2006 I wrote a Joyinmovement newsletter about meeting Rene in person and taking a jump rope lesson with her.
A lot happens over the course of 11 years, but I’m thrilled to say both Rene and I are still in great shape and enjoying the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle. She’s an amazing woman and I wanted to reintroduce you to her and the work she does.
I asked Rene what’s going on in her life and more about jump roping.
Question: Why do you make time to read the Joyinmovement newsletter?
Answer: I remember reading your first newsletter back when the idea of newsletters was still very new online. I was impressed with quantity of content and the quality information. That’s never changed – well done.
Question: When did you first start jumping rope?
Answer: As you know, I started jumping rope as a passionate 5th grader, joined a competitive jump rope team, traveled the world doing jump rope shows and competitions. After that I joined Cirque du Soleil as a Coach and performer. I continue to consult with their special events team and perform on occasion.
Folks can see some fun highlights of me, and the sport of jumprope on my website at learntojumprope.com/public-highlights
Question: Tell me more about jumping rope and your business, Ropeworks.
Answer: What I hope your readers have learned from your mission helping people find Joyinmovement is that rope jumping is portable, inexpensive, and incredibly effective. It helps with agility, timing, and coordination It really helps burn calories and increases cardio fitness.
My advice for anyone starting out is to start slowly. Start with 10 jumps then rest for 10 seconds. Repeat. Then add on more jumps as your timing and coordination improve.
It’s great for layering into your workouts. Jump rope between sets of weights or other cardio activities.
A great spot to learn some basics is here: http://learntojumprope.com/session-notes/ It includes set up, rope styles and sizing, proper form, and starter drills.
My company, Ropeworks, is 15 years old this year. We excel at sharing the art of jumping rope. On the 15th anniversary of the business, I created a product that had been in my head for years. It’s primarily focused on youth and their educators, but I’ve had plenty of adults buy the system for their own use, and they’ve truly benefited and enjoyed learning the 92 various jump rope skills.
Question: You mentioned your jumproping products. Can you tell us about them?
Answer: The full system is a color coded set of 6 posters which separate the various skills by type. There’s footwork, arm action, manipulation, strength, turns and power. Each skill has an online video breakdown organized using the same color coded system, for ease of use.
It’s online at learntojumprope.com/shop it’s $249. It’s an excellent product and the skills are shown in slow motion, then at full speed and lastly broken down step-by-step.
I also created jump rope cards, using the same system. These are mailed in a notebook in baseball card holders. The videos that accompany the cards show a video demo of each of the 92 skills. It’s $49
In addition to the physical products I’ve created, we continue to offer youth after school and summer camp programs, athletic edge training workshops, and I continue to perform my one woman show for schools and corporate team building.
Question: I like to ask people about the books they read. Which ones were your favorites from last year?
Answer: I liked the book Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. It reminds us of the magic that truly exists in the world and the power of creativity. I also read The Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. She spends a year saying “yes” to everything she’s offered. I liked it.

p.s. So many people have asked me about my newest adventure in travel writing/blogging. I sent out an announcement about it back in June. Here’s the very first travel post that introduces me: http://travelwithgrant.boardingarea.com/2017/01/04/new-writer-qa-with-shelli/
But the bigger question is WHY; why travel and why write about it. Here at Joyinmovement I always talk about healthy aging through movement. I hope over the years I’ve convinced you that staying fit and moving well are keys to aging well. I also feel that travel is a key to healthy aging! I see it in myself as well as others who travel. So my passion for healthy aging through travel and writing about it seems like a natural fit for me. I hope you’ll follow along with me as I travel and share my experiences with you over at http://travelwithgrant.boardingarea.com/author/shelli/
