A New Take On New Year’s Resolutions

Hello friends, and welcome to this month’s Joyinmovement newsletter.

The holiday season is upon us, so I’m going to keep this month’s message short and simple. It’s a powerful one, though!

I’m going to make a case for abandoning your New Year’s resolutions and goals, and instead use a very different metric in 2017. That’s what I’ll be doing, and I’m hoping you’ll come along for the ride with me.

Let me explain.

We all have metrics that we use to measure our lives and how successful we are. And our goals are based on these measurements. They often revolve around money, happiness, work, accomplishments or the accomplishments of our kids.

For years I’ve used these types of metrics to set my resolutions and goals, but at this point in my life they don’t feel right or authentic for me anymore. As an experiment, I’ve chosen a new metric for the coming year. See what you think!

I’m calling this the, “That seems interesting, let’s try it” metric. Given my curious and open to new experiences nature, it’s often been how I view my journey anyway. What I’ll do is take action anytime I learn or discover something interesting. There are no goals here other than to realize my interest has been peaked and to take some action.

It will be a journey without a destination because I have no idea where saying, “Let’s try it” will take me. This feels wonderful to me and full of possibility. I’ve actually started using this metric more towards the end of 2016 and it’s been fascinating and certainly different!

So even if you’re not willing to embrace a journey with different metrics, my message as we finish the year and start to envision the next one is to make sure the metrics you use to measure your actions are in alignment with your priorities, beliefs, and ambitions.

Happy holidays, and may the new year bring you peace, love, and light!

p.s. Many thanks to my friend Colin for encouraging me to think differently about metrics.
