Hello friends, and welcome to this month’s Joyinmovement newsletter.
September is my birthday month, so I always like to write something a little different for this month. How about something borrowed, something blue, something old and something new?
Let’s BORROW these words of wisdom from Jack LaLanne. I resonate with his message and enjoy his humor. Surprisingly, LaLanne didn’t love to exercise. “It’s a pain in the glutes,” he said. “But you gotta do it. Dying is easy, living is tough. I hate working out. Hate it. But I like the results.” Besides, he said, “I can’t die. It’d ruin my image.” He also knew a trained body was a healthy and productive one. “The only way you can hurt the body is not use it,” he said. To avoid plateaus and overuse injuries, he changed his exercise routine every 30 days.
The color BLUE always reminds me of the ocean. And I love to swim, especially in the ocean. For so many people, swimming well is a real challenge. As you’ve heard me mention before, I feel everyone should learn to swim well, and enjoy swimming as much as I do. I was just talking with a friend last week who said she enjoys swimming but finds it’s difficult because she has breathing issues. I often hear stories like this. Swimming well and feeling relaxed in the water is such a gift. The actions that will improve your swimming ability are often counterintuitive!! What pursuits do you think form a circle of well-being? Here are the ones I’d choose. They are based off OLD and ancient texts, yet seem more relevant today then ever.
• Education: Nourish the need for intellectual stimulation
• Emotional: Be aware of your emotions and deal with stress
• Faith: Build a relationship with God, others, and traditions
• Health: Manage your physical health and seek the necessary medical care
• Kinetic: Find ways to appreciate physical activity
• Love: Share experiences and support with those closest to you
• Nosh: Develop healthy eating habits and make positive food choices
• Rest: Recognize the weekly need to take down time
• Righteousness: Donate a portion of your earnings to those less fortunate
• Service: Make an impact in the world by performing acts of loving-kindness
• Work: Appreciate your strengths and those found within others
Ah, now for something NEW! A few weeks ago I was having lunch with a friend and ordered a farro pie. It was an Italian style dish. I had been meaning to try farro and finally got my chance. And guess what? I really liked it. Farro is a low gluten grain packed with protein. It is sold dry and prepared by cooking in water until it’s soft but still crunchy. It can be eaten plain, though I actually find it served more often in soups and salads. Farro has 7 grams of protein per serving (1/4 cup dry). That’s more than either quinoa or brown rice.
Farro is not commonly eaten in North America, but I did find it for sale at Costco. Here are some of the ways I’ll be trying it: as breakfast with some fruit, with salads, in soups, and to vegetarian burritos for some added protein. Have you tried farro? So there you have it. Something borrowed, blue, old, and new! Since I started writing these newsletters in May 2006, you’ve shared TEN birthdays with me. I am so very grateful for your readership and friendship. And, at the end of the day, if you can use some of these ideas I bring to you to live a healthier, better, and more fulfilling life, then I’m happy!
